The Helderberg Route is home to some of the oldest wine farms in South Africa. This area stretches from Somerset West to the edge of Stellenbosch and in this area lies the Golden Triangle, a top wine growing area. The cooling effect of the moisture laden sea breezes from nearby False Bay, combined with the excellent soil structures, form ideal for growing noble varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. The moderating effect of the Atlantic Ocean results in cool afternoons and evenings that are ideal for growing quality grapes. This area is home to top quality wineries like Rust & Vrede and Ernie Els wines to name a few.
